Try This: You can create a mechanical card reader that, instead of sensing holes in a card, reacts to bumps on a plate, not unlike a attened cam-andfollower arrangement. Figure 7-9 shows the construction steps for this reader. Note that in step 3, the two liftarms are not locked together. Make sure that everything is assembled loosely enough so that the liftarms move smoothly and independently. If gravity isn t strong enough for your liking, you can loop rubber bands across the obvious attachment points. Figure 7-10 shows a bump-based card. If you take this card and slide it through the reader, the bumps make the liftarms lift.
